Bilan is the name of a final exam at Art School of Dijon. It is one of the mandatory examinations organized at the end of each semester. It is not organized only at the end of the cycles, i.e., in S06 and S10, because in S06 and S10 the students take their Bachelor Diploma DNA and Masters Diploma DNSEP.

What does the final exam, so called bilan, look like?

The bilan takes the form of an oral interview based on an exposition (installation of work) and a table of references (personal research produced during the semester, work notes, etc.). Its length varies according to the year of study:

  • Year 1: between 10 and 15 minutes
  • Year 2: 20 minutes
  • Year 3: 30 minutes
  • Years 4 and 5: 40 minutes

The interview generally takes place in two stages:

  • time for presentation;
  • time for questions-answers;

It should provide an evaluation of the student's career path, commitment to the creative field and the quality of his or her production, particularly his or her visual arts research project.

What is the jury's composition?

The composition of the bilan jury is proposed by the coordinator of the year in question and submitted to the school management for approval.

Juries are formed to encourage a plurality of viewpoints. The following rules apply:

  • 3 to 5 members, including the coordinator;
  • aim for parity: at least one woman for 3-member juries, two women for 4-member juries, at least two women for 5-member juries (cf. equality charter);
  • diversity of mediums and at least one theorist represented;
  • move towards porosity between the Art and Space Design options;
  • unicity of the jury on the same bilan;
  • different juries for the 1st and 2nd semesters.

The composition of juries is posted on the school's Pedagogy communication boards.

More information about bilans:

  • Bilans' examinations are open to the public, unless the student decides not to.
  • At the end of the bilan, the jury evaluates the test, behind closed doors, with the possible presence of a pedagogical representative.

The bilan is a test in its own right, evaluated independently of the other marks obtained during the semester. It is not a substitute for continuous assessment and represents one grade among those for the semester. Evaluation is based on four criteria (5 points/criterion) which differ according to the year of study.

All assessments (continuous assessment and semester report) are submitted to the management for approval before being communicated to students.
